Mother, wife, homemaker, loyal friend
Born in Jaffa to parents who were both survivors of the Armenian genocide, Diko was one of five children. While far from wealthy, hers was a loving family that enjoyed good food and valued education. From an early age Diko excelled in school, establishing a lifelong interest in history, other people’s life stories and culture. Growing up in a multicultural community, she mastered six languages including French which she continued to read and speak at every opportunity her entire life. A risk taker, she immigrated to Toronto with her beloved husband Elias (predeceased) and built a new life and loving home and family in Canada with their three children, Nanette (John Greenwood), Serge (Susan Gauthier) and Natalie, and grandchildren, Jeremy, Alexander and Chlöe. She leaves behind her siblings Haigo, Alice, Mihran and Koko.
A loving mother and sister figure to many, Diko will be remembered for opening her home and heart, inviting family and friends into her house (and her kitchen!) with a warm welcome and a delicious home-cooked meal. She was sharp, curious and open – building a quick closeness bridging generations and backgrounds with all who came into her life, right up to her last days. Being more home-bound in her later years did not slow her down – an avid reader and puzzle master – she would devour books at a record pace, and kept in regular touch by phone with numerous friends and family. Her hard work, perseverance, loyalty, compassion, friendliness, generosity, and unrelenting support of family and friends will always be remembered.
She touched so many people over so many years – leaving a lasting impression that will be cherished. May she rest in peace.
