Urgent Action Required for Armenian Saturday School
Dear Faithful Parishioners,
The challenges of living in the Diaspora are numerous and varied, sometimes they appear without warning and it can threaten our efforts to keep our Armenian language, culture, faith and identity and pass them to future generations.
Our beloved St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School was established 63 years ago but today, the school and its 350 students are facing serious budget cuts from the Ministry of Education. Please read the School Principal, Dr. Arpi Panossian’s letter below and take action by sending e-mails or calling the responsible persons today.

Սփիւռքի մէջ ապրելու եւ մանաւա՛նդ հայօրէն ապրելու մարտահրաւէրները բազմաթիւ են ու տեսակաւոր, որոնք երբեմն առանց նախազգուշութեան կը յայտնուին մեր գաղութի կեանքին մէջ, սպառնելով մեր ապագայ սերունդներու հոգեւոր, ազգային եւ մշակութային պատկանելիութեան ու գոյութեան։
Այս պարագային վտանգը կը սպառնայ վաթսուներեք տարիներու անցեալ ունեցող Ս. Սահակ եւ Ս. Մեսրոպ Ազգային Շաբաթօրեայ վարժարանին ու անոր 350 աշակերտութեան, որ Կրթութեան նախարարութեան որոշումով կրնայ փակուիլ։
Կը խնդրենք կարդալ վարժարանի Տնօրէնուհի՝ Դոկտ. Արփի Փանոսեանի նամակը եւ արձագանգել անոր շատ շտապ, ուղարկելով ե նամակներ եւ կամ հեռաձայնել այնտեղ նշուած պատասխանատու անձերուն։
Սիրելի՛ թորոնթոհայեր, տէր եւ նեցուկ կանգնինք Սփիւռքի մէջ հայապահպանութեան հիմնական կառոյցներէն՝ Ս. Սահակ եւ Ս. Մեսրոպ Ազգային Շաբաթօրեայ Վարժարանին։

Dear Parents,
For the last three years, our St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Armenian Saturday School has been supported by the Toronto District School Board’s International Languages Program (TDSB ILE). Their support covers the rent of the school for 2.5 hours a day and payment of one half of our teachers. We need this support in order to continue operating as a successful school.
Last night, the education minister met with TDSB executive directors and proposed cuts to the ILE program.
Our teachers were informed that because of funding cuts from the provincial government, TDSB’s International Languages Program on Saturdays, including the Grade 9/10 credit course, are in jeopardy as of September 2019. This means that these programs could be eliminated and that we could lose our funding from the government as of this September.
At this time, we are advised to mobilize our community and speak up against the possible decision of cutting all our funding. The Trustees’ meeting for a final decision will take place today, May 15th 4:30pm at 5050 Yonge Street, Toronto.
We do have a chance to raise our voice and demand that our Armenian Saturday School Program at Forest Manor P. S. remains funded and therefore open for many years to come.
So, I suggest that you send a short email to (or call) Toronto Trustees and Councilors requesting that the Armenian Saturday School programs at Forest Manor P. S. continue to be offered because our school has been running for 63 years and we don’t want it unsupported. The email could be just one line or a page mentioning
“Save our Armenian Saturday School”
“We need the Armenian Saturday School so that we pass on our language to our children and raise multicultural citizens” etc.
